Epson Printer Communication Error: How to Fix It

Epson printer communication error on a laptop

An Epson communication error means the computer and printer cannot talk reliably. The printer may still be fine; the problem is usually Wi-Fi, USB, a stale duplicate printer entry, a stuck queue, a firewall, or a driver issue.

Does this affect you?

Use this guide if Windows, macOS, or Epson software says it cannot communicate with the printer, cannot find it, or loses connection during a print job.

Restart devices and check the connection

This clears more printer communication issues than it probably should.

  1. Turn the printer off with its power button. If it uses Wi-Fi, restart the router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds if practical.
  2. For USB, unplug the cable from both ends and reconnect it directly to the computer, not through a hub or dock.
  3. Restart the computer to clear background printing processes.
  4. Turn the printer on, wait for the ready state, and test again.

Fix the printer entry on the computer

Duplicate or stale printer entries commonly appear after network changes.

  1. Open Printers & scanners on Windows or macOS.
  2. Remove old duplicate Epson entries and keep only the current one.
  3. Set the correct Epson printer as default.
  4. If Windows shows it offline, open the queue and clear Use Printer Offline.
  5. For Wi-Fi printers, confirm computer and printer are on the same network, not a guest network.

Clear the queue and reset printing

A single stuck job can block everything behind it.

  1. Open the Epson print queue and cancel stuck jobs.
  2. On Windows, if jobs will not cancel, open services.msc, restart Print Spooler, and then try again.
  3. On Mac, remove stuck jobs from the queue in Printers & Scanners.
  4. Send a fresh test page after the queue is empty.

More control

Reinstall the driver last

If connection and queue checks fail, remove the printer and install the latest full driver package from Epson Support for your exact model.

Check firewall software

Third-party security tools can block local printer traffic. Temporarily disable only the third-party firewall for a test, then re-enable it and add a printer exception if needed.

Avoid hubs and long USB runs

Some hubs and long cables allow partial printing but break two-way status communication. Test with a short direct USB cable.
