Epson Printer Not Printing Black – How to Fix It

Epson printer black ink troubleshooting

When an Epson printer prints colors but not black, the cause is usually a clogged black nozzle or a black cartridge/tank issue. Even if the software says ink is present, dried ink can block the nozzle and prevent black output.

Does this affect you?

Use this guide if black text is missing, faded, streaky, or blank while color areas still print.

Run a nozzle check and head cleaning

Epson built-in tools solve most missing-black problems.

  1. Load paper and open Epson Printer Utility from Windows printer properties or macOS printer utilities.
  2. Run Nozzle Check and inspect the black pattern for gaps.
  3. If the black lines are broken or missing, run Head Cleaning.
  4. Print another nozzle check after cleaning.
  5. Repeat cleaning up to two or three times if the black pattern improves but is not fully restored.

If three cleaning cycles do not restore black ink, move to the cartridge or tank checks rather than running cleaning endlessly.

Check and reseat the black cartridge

Use this if cleaning does not fix the nozzle check.

  1. Open the ink access cover and let the carriage move to the replacement position.
  2. Remove the black cartridge and check for protective tape on the bottom if it is new.
  3. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks.
  4. Run another nozzle check.
  5. If the cartridge is old, low, dried out, or reported faulty, replace it and test again.

More control

EcoTank models are different

On EcoTank printers, check the black ink tank level window and make sure it was filled correctly. Air bubbles or an underfilled tank can cause black output problems.

Non-genuine ink can clog

If the issue began after switching to third-party or refilled ink, test with genuine Epson ink if possible. Ink formula differences can clog Epson printheads.

Print regularly

Inkjet nozzles clog faster when unused for weeks. A small test page every week or two helps keep black ink moving.

Check print settings

Look for draft, grayscale, composite black, or color-only settings in the print dialog. A changed driver preference can make the symptom look like an ink failure.
