A greasy range hood filter blocks airflow and sits directly above heat. Cleaning it improves smoke and odor capture and reduces grease-fire risk.
This applies to removable metal mesh or baffle filters in under-cabinet and over-the-range hoods. Charcoal filters are replace-only.

Use this if the hood pulls poorly, the filter is yellow or brown with grease, or cooking smells linger longer than they used to.
Safety first
- Turn the hood and stove burners off.
- Let grates and burners cool before working above them.
- Keep grease-soaked filters and rags away from flame or hot surfaces.
- Use degreasers only as directed and ventilate the kitchen.
- Check whether your filter is dishwasher-safe before using that method.
Hand wash: soak and scrub
- Remove the filter using its release tab or slide mechanism.
- Fill a sink or basin with hot water.
- Add 1/4 cup baking soda and grease-cutting dish soap.
- Soak the filter 10 to 15 minutes, or longer for heavy buildup.
- Scrub both sides with a stiff non-metal brush.
- Rinse under hot water.
- Hold mesh filters up to light to confirm air can pass clearly.
- Dry fully before reinstalling.
Dishwasher method
- Use only if the manual or filter allows dishwasher cleaning.
- Place the filter on the top rack, upright if possible.
- Run a hot heavy-duty cycle.
- Inspect afterward for grease film.
- Follow with hand soaking if months of buildup remain.
Average cooking usually calls for monthly cleaning. Light cooking may stretch to 6 to 8 weeks, while daily frying or wok cooking may need 2 to 3 week intervals.
Recirculating range hoods often use charcoal or carbon filters. These absorb odor, do not wash clean, and usually need replacement every 3 to 6 months.
