Manual-defrost freezers need occasional ice removal. The trick is to melt and loosen the ice without puncturing the liner or hidden refrigerant coils behind it.
This applies to manual-defrost freezers, chest freezers, older upright or mini freezers, and similar units. Frost-free refrigerator-freezers should not need repeated manual defrosting.
Does this affect you?
Use this if frost is thicker than about 1/4 inch, storage space is shrinking, or the freezer is working harder than usual.
Safety first
- Unplug the freezer at the wall before starting.
- Never use a knife, screwdriver, ice pick, or sharp tool on ice.
- Do not place a heat gun or hair dryer close to plastic liner surfaces.
- Keep towels ready for meltwater.
- Move food to a cooler, another freezer, or ice-packed storage.
Standard safe defrost
- Empty the freezer.
- Unplug it and prop the door or lid open.
- Line the floor and interior with towels.
- Place a shallow pan near any drain or low point.
- Let ice melt naturally.
- Remove loosened ice by hand or with a plastic scraper.
- Wipe the interior with mild baking soda and water.
- Dry fully, plug back in, and reload after it returns to temperature.
Speed it up safely
- Place bowls of hot, not boiling, water inside for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
- Use a fan from outside the freezer to circulate room air.
- Use a hair dryer only on low, moving constantly, and held several inches away.
- Stop if you smell burning or see plastic discoloring.
- Let loosened sheets lift away instead of chipping.
Fast frost return often means a dirty or worn door gasket is letting humid air inside. Clean and test the seal. If a frost-free fridge-freezer starts icing heavily, the automatic defrost system likely needs repair.
