You can clean oven grease and burnt-on food without a strong commercial oven cleaner. Baking soda, vinegar, steam, dish soap, and time do most of the work, with far less odor.
This applies to standard electric and gas ovens without a self-clean cycle, or to anyone who prefers not to use self-clean.

Safety first
- Make sure the oven is off and completely cool.
- Do not wipe or spray hot heating elements.
- For gas ovens, keep paste and liquid away from igniters and burner ports.
- Ventilate the kitchen while working.
- Use non-scratch pads instead of metal scrapers.
Baking soda and vinegar for heavy buildup
- Remove oven racks.
- Mix about 1/2 cup baking soda with a few tablespoons of water into a thick paste.
- Spread the paste over greasy interior surfaces, avoiding elements and vents.
- Let it sit at least 12 hours or overnight.
- Wipe out dried paste with a damp cloth.
- Spray leftover residue with white vinegar and let it fizz.
- Wipe clean with fresh damp cloths and repeat stubborn spots gently.
Steam method for light buildup
- Fill an oven-safe dish with about 2 cups water.
- Add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice.
- Heat the oven to 250F for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Turn it off and leave the door closed 15 to 20 minutes.
- When safe to touch, wipe the loosened residue away.
For door glass, use baking soda paste for 15 to 20 minutes, then wipe clean. Soak racks in hot water, dish soap, and baking soda for at least an hour, then scrub with a non-scratch sponge and dry before reinstalling.
A self-clean cycle is chemical-free but extremely hot. For routine upkeep, light baking soda paste cleaning every few weeks prevents the heavy buildup that makes oven cleaning miserable.
