Linking Spotify to Alexa and making it the default music service are two separate steps. If you skip the default setting, Alexa may keep choosing Amazon Music even after Spotify is connected.
These steps apply to Echo speakers and displays linked to a free or Premium Spotify account through the Alexa app.

Link Spotify to Alexa
Start by authorizing Alexa to control your Spotify account.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Music & Podcasts.
- Choose Link New Service.
- Select Spotify.
- Sign in with your Spotify account.
- Confirm the authorization request.
After linking, Alexa can play Spotify when you name the service explicitly, such as Alexa, play my dinner playlist on Spotify.
Set Spotify as the default music service
This prevents Alexa from choosing Amazon Music when you do not name a service.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Go to More > Settings > Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Your Default Services or Default Services.
- Choose Spotify for music.
- Save the setting if prompted.
Now commands such as Alexa, play Fleetwood Mac or Alexa, play my workout playlist should use Spotify by default. You can still ask for another service by name for one request.
Fix Spotify problems on Alexa
- If linking fails, confirm you are using the correct Spotify login.
- If playback is wrong on a Spotify Free account, remember that free accounts may shuffle instead of playing an exact track.
- If a family member needs their Spotify account, unlink the current one and sign in with the new account.
- If playback stalls, unlink Spotify in Alexa music settings and link it again.
- Use Spotify Connect from the Spotify app if you want to choose an exact Echo speaker from your phone.
Alexa connects to one Spotify account per Amazon profile at a time. Multi-room music still works with Spotify; say Alexa, play on [group name] after the speaker group is created in the Alexa app.
