How to Connect Alexa to Smart Lights

Smart home troubleshooting category image

Alexa can control smart bulbs by voice once the lights are connected through the Alexa app. Some bulbs connect through Wi-Fi, while others use a bridge such as Philips Hue.

These steps apply to Wi-Fi smart bulbs from brands such as Wyze, Kasa, Sengled, and Amazon Basics, plus bridge-based lights such as Philips Hue.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you want to say Alexa, turn on the lights instead of opening a bulb app. Smart bulbs screw into normal light sockets; no electrical wiring is needed for bulbs.

Connect Wi-Fi smart bulbs

Most budget and mid-range bulbs use Wi-Fi and do not need a separate bridge.

  1. Screw the smart bulb into the fixture.
  2. Turn the fixture’s physical switch on.
  3. Wait for the bulb to blink or pulse in pairing mode.
  4. Set up the bulb in its manufacturer’s app first.
  5. Connect it to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network if the app asks.
  6. Open the Alexa app.
  7. Tap More > Skills & Games.
  8. Search for the bulb brand, such as Wyze or Kasa Smart.
  9. Enable the skill and sign in with the same brand account.
  10. Tap Devices > + > Add Device > Light and discover the bulb.

After discovery, use the bulb name from the manufacturer app or rename it in Alexa to something natural, such as Bedroom Lamp or Porch Light.

Connect bridge-based bulbs such as Philips Hue

Hue and some other systems use Zigbee bulbs that talk to their own bridge first. Alexa then links to the bridge account.

  1. Plug the Hue Bridge into your router with Ethernet.
  2. Set up the bridge and bulbs in the Hue app.
  3. Open the Alexa app.
  4. Go to More > Skills & Games.
  5. Search for Philips Hue and enable the skill.
  6. Sign in with your Hue account.
  7. Tap Devices > + > Discover Devices.
  8. Wait while Alexa imports the bulbs from the bridge.

This links the whole Hue system at once, so you do not need to add every bulb manually after it is already paired in Hue.

Make light control easier

Create Alexa room groups under Devices > Groups. Put all living-room bulbs in a Living Room group, then Alexa, turn on the living room controls the room instead of one bulb.

Rename awkward imported devices. Bulb 2 Bedroom C7A4 is harder for Alexa and people than Nightstand Lamp.

Use More > Routines for schedules such as sunset porch lights, bedtime dimming, or a morning wake-up scene.

Smart switches are different from smart bulbs. A wall switch replacement connects to line-voltage wiring behind the wall, so hire a licensed electrician unless you are trained and comfortable working at the breaker panel.
