Xbox system updates can fail because storage is low, the download was interrupted, the network is unstable, or the console is stuck in an update loop. Most fixes do not remove games or saves.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Use this if an Xbox update stalls, shows an error code, restarts back to the same update screen, or will not finish downloading.
Free up storage and check your connection
Storage and connection issues account for many update failures.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and check free space.
- Free several gigabytes if storage is low.
- Uninstall a large game you are not playing; saves remain tied to the account.
- Connect Ethernet if possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for one minute.
- Hold the console Xbox button for 10 seconds to shut down fully, then turn it on and retry.
System updates need temporary room to unpack, so the update file size is not the full space requirement.
Run an offline system update
Use this if the console cannot get past the update screen or is looping.
- On a computer, format an 8 GB or larger USB drive as NTFS.
- Download the official Xbox Offline System Update file.
- Unzip it and copy the folder to the root of the USB drive.
- Do not place the update files loose on the drive.
- Plug the USB drive into the Xbox.
- On consoles with a disc drive, hold Pair and Eject, then press the Xbox button.
- On all-digital consoles, hold Pair, then press the Xbox button.
- Keep holding until the troubleshooting screen appears, then follow the prompts.
Do not unplug the console or USB drive during the offline update. The process can take 20 to 30 minutes.
Other update checks
Search any exact error code on Xbox Support because known codes often have targeted fixes.
Disconnect external hard drives or expansion cards temporarily and update using internal storage only. A failing external device can interfere with the process.
Check Xbox service status if many people report update trouble. If offline update recovery fails and the console is trapped in a boot loop, use Reset console and choose the keep-games option if it is offered.
