Xbox storage fills quickly because modern games and updates can exceed 50 to 100 GB. Before deleting random items, check what is using space and remove the least painful content first.
These steps apply to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One.

See what’s using space and clear it out
The storage screen shows where the space is going.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review games, apps, and other content sorted by size.
- Open Games and apps.
- Uninstall large games you have not played in months.
- For multi-part games, remove add-ons or game modes you do not use when available.
- Open Captures and clips and delete old screenshots or videos.
- Clear reserved space for games you do not currently play.
- Restart the console after cleanup.
Most cloud-saved progress is tied to your account, so uninstalling a game usually does not remove progress. You can reinstall the game later.
Add more storage
If cleanup is not enough, expansion storage prevents constant uninstalling.
- For Xbox Series X|S, use an official Storage Expansion Card for current-generation games.
- Insert the card into the dedicated rear expansion slot.
- Format it for Xbox when prompted.
- For older Xbox One games, use a USB 3.0 external drive with 200 GB or more.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and confirm the drive appears.
- Set a default install location if desired.
- Move existing games from My games & apps by choosing Move.
Series X|S games generally need internal storage or the official expansion card to run at full speed. A generic USB drive is still useful for older games and cold storage.
When storage is enough
If removing captures and unused games gives you comfortable space, periodic cleanup may be all you need. If every large update forces another deletion, expansion storage is the more convenient fix.
