If Steam opens but one game will not start, the cause is usually local to that game: a missing file, outdated driver, missing runtime component, antivirus block, overlay conflict, or old-game compatibility issue.
These steps apply to games installed through Steam on Windows.

Verify the integrity of the game’s files
Steam can repair missing or corrupted files without a full reinstall.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait while Steam scans and downloads replacements.
- Try launching the game again.
File verification is the right first step for one-game launch failures because it targets only that install.
Update your graphics driver
A game can silently fail when the graphics driver is too old for the engine or a recent game patch.
- Check your graphics card in Display settings > Advanced display or Device Manager > Display adapters.
- For NVIDIA, open the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience and check Drivers.
- For AMD, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and check for updates.
- Install the update.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Restarting after a graphics driver update is worth doing even when the installer does not force it.
Reinstall missing redistributables and run as administrator
Many Windows games rely on Visual C++ and DirectX runtimes bundled in the game folder.
- Right-click the game in Steam.
- Open Properties > Installed Files > Browse.
- Look for folders named _CommonRedist or Redist.
- Run vcredist or DirectX installers inside those folders.
- Try Run as administrator for one launch.
- Restart the PC to clear stuck background processes.
If an installer failed the first time, the game may close with no useful error until those components are repaired.
Antivirus, overlays, and old games
Check antivirus quarantine if the game stopped launching after an update. Restore the file only if it belongs to the legitimate game install.
Close overlays from Discord, recording software, GPU tools, and other launchers while testing. Some games fail before opening when an overlay hooks too early.
For older games, browse to the game’s .exe file, open Properties > Compatibility, and test compatibility mode for an older Windows version.
