When Steam closes by itself, disappears during downloads, or crashes without an error, the usual causes are corrupted local files, outdated drivers, or another program conflicting with Steam.
These steps apply to Steam on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.

Use this if the Steam client vanishes, crashes soon after opening, or closes while a game or download is running.
Clear the Steam download cache
This is the fastest common fix and it does not delete installed games.
- Open Steam.
- Click Steam in the menu bar.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm and let Steam restart.
- Sign back in and test again.
The cache holds temporary download data. If it becomes corrupted, Steam can crash while loading the client, updating, or downloading.
Update your graphics driver
Driver problems are more likely when Steam crashes while a game opens or while the client renders pages.
- On Windows, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters.
- Download the current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel for your exact graphics hardware.
- Choose Clean Install if the installer offers it.
- Restart the PC afterward.
- On Mac, install graphics fixes through Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
A clean driver install removes leftover files from older driver versions that can cause conflicts.
Rename or delete the corrupted config file
If Steam still crashes on launch, rebuild its main local config file.
- Close Steam completely.
- On Windows, open Task Manager and end Steam or SteamService processes.
- Open the Steam install folder, usually C:Program Files (x86)Steam.
- Open the config folder.
- Rename config.vdf to config.vdf.old.
- Reopen Steam and sign in again.
Renaming instead of deleting gives you an easy way to restore the old file if needed.
Check overlays, permissions, and reinstalling
Disable Steam Overlay under Settings > In-Game, then test. If that helps, close other overlays such as Discord, capture tools, RGB software, and other launchers one at a time.
Run Steam as administrator once. If that stops the crashes, fix permissions on the Steam install folder by giving your user account Full control.
If reinstalling becomes necessary, uninstall Steam and install the latest client from the official site into the same folder. Do not delete the steamapps folder; that is where your games live.
