When a Steam game worked before an update and fails right after, the update may have left a damaged file, required a newer driver, or shipped with a bug. Steam’s built-in file verification is the best first repair.
These steps apply to Steam on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use this if a game updated in Steam and now does nothing, flashes the Play button, crashes to desktop, or fails at launch.
Verify the integrity of the game’s files
This checks the installed files against Steam’s records and replaces anything missing or damaged.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game that will not launch.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and any re-downloads to finish.
- Launch the game again after Steam reports success.
This is not a full reinstall, and it normally leaves saves and settings alone.
Restart Steam and check for a pending Windows or driver update
If verification finds nothing, restart the client and bring supporting software up to date.
- Exit Steam from the system tray instead of only closing the window.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- End leftover steam.exe or game processes if they remain.
- Reopen Steam and test the game.
- Check Settings > Windows Update.
- Update your graphics driver through NVIDIA or AMD software.
- Restart the PC after updates.
A game update can require driver behavior your old graphics driver does not handle well.
Clear Steam’s local download cache
Use this after file verification and restarts if the game still refuses to open.
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Go to Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Allow Steam to restart.
- Sign back in and try the game again.
Download cache clearing resets Steam’s temporary download data, not your installed library.
When the update itself is broken
Check the game’s Steam Community Hub or official Discord if the problem began immediately after a large update. If many players report the same launch failure, waiting for a hotfix may be the real fix.
Some games let you roll back through Properties > Betas by choosing an older branch. Not every developer offers this, but it can help while a bad update is repaired.
Also check antivirus quarantine. A newly updated executable can be treated as unknown and blocked from running.
