PSN Not Working? How to Fix PlayStation Network Connection Issues

Consoles and gaming troubleshooting category image

PSN issues can affect sign-in, the PlayStation Store, friends lists, downloads, or online multiplayer. Before changing your setup, check whether PlayStation Network itself is having an outage.

These steps apply to PS5 and PS4 consoles and the PlayStation App.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you cannot sign in to PSN, the Store will not load, online play fails, or PlayStation services fail while the rest of your internet seems normal.

Check PSN’s server status

This is the fastest way to know whether the issue is on Sony’s side.

  1. Open PlayStation’s official Network Service Status page on a phone or computer.
  2. Check sign-in, PlayStation Store, gaming, social, and account services separately.
  3. If a matching service shows an outage, wait for Sony to fix it.
  4. If all services are available, continue with your console connection.

A partial PSN outage can break Store or sign-in while other online features still work, so match the status page to your exact symptom.

Test and reset your console’s connection

Once PSN is up, test the network path from the console.

  1. On PS5 or PS4, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
  2. Note whether the failure is Internet Connection, PlayStation Network Sign-In, or another service.
  3. Restart the router by unplugging it for one full minute.
  4. Wait for the router to reconnect fully.
  5. Restart the console completely, not Rest Mode.
  6. Test a wired Ethernet connection if you normally use Wi-Fi.
  7. Run the connection test again.

Ethernet is the cleanest way to rule out Wi-Fi interference during sign-in and multiplayer troubleshooting.

Fix account-specific sign-in errors

Use these steps if the console internet test passes but your account still will not sign in.

  1. Check Settings > System > Date and Time and set the time automatically.
  2. Sign out fully, then sign back in with the correct email and password.
  3. If the console reports a password problem, reset the password from PlayStation’s browser account recovery page.
  4. Log into your PlayStation account in a browser and check for billing holds, restrictions, or account messages.
  5. If two-step verification is enabled and your phone changed, use PlayStation account recovery to restore access.

Incorrect date and time can break secure sign-in even when the internet connection itself works.

DNS, NAT, and router firmware

If only PlayStation services fail, try public DNS. On PS5, edit the connection’s Advanced Settings and set DNS to Manual with 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Similar DNS settings are available on PS4 under custom network setup.

Strict NAT can cause multiplayer and sometimes Store or sign-in weirdness. If connection tests show Strict NAT, review router UPnP, port forwarding, or double-NAT issues.

Router firmware can also matter. Check your router app or admin page for updates if PSN problems continue while other services appear normal.
