A PS5 that will not read a disc is usually dealing with a dirty or damaged disc, a confused system state, dust around the drive, or a loose detachable drive on PS5 Slim. A full drive failure is possible, but check the simple causes first.
These steps apply to the PS5 disc edition and PS5 Slim with the detachable disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the PS5 asks you to insert a disc, ejects a disc right away, does not spin the disc, or fails to recognize a game or movie disc.
Check the disc and do a basic reset
This fixes many disc-read problems in only a few minutes.
- Eject the disc and inspect the shiny side for smudges, dust, and scratches.
- Wipe the disc with a soft lint-free cloth in straight lines from the center to the edge.
- Do not wipe in circles, use paper towels, or spray household glass cleaner on the disc.
- Try a different disc that you know works.
- Make sure the PS5 is stable, either horizontal or vertical with the stand installed as intended.
- Turn off the PS5 fully instead of using Rest Mode.
- Unplug it from power for about one minute, then plug it back in and try the disc again.
- Install any pending system software update if the console can boot far enough to check.
If every other disc works and only one disc fails, the disc is the problem. Focus on cleaning, replacement, or disc damage rather than console repair.
Rebuild the database and check the disc drive connection
Use these steps when a clean, known-good disc still will not read.
- Power off the console completely.
- Hold the power button until the second beep, about 7 seconds, to enter Safe Mode.
- Choose Rebuild Database.
- Let the PS5 finish and restart.
- If you have a PS5 Slim, detach the disc drive, inspect the connector for dust or damage, and reattach it firmly according to Sony’s guide.
- Insert a disc and listen for the drive to spin up.
- Note any silence, repeated clicking, or grinding.
A normal drive should briefly whir as it reads a disc. Silence or mechanical clicking on every disc points toward hardware service.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the drive fails with every clean disc after a power cycle, update, database rebuild, and Slim drive reseat, open a PlayStation Support case. For PS5 Slim, mention the detachable disc drive because it can be serviced as a separate part.
Avoid opening the drive yourself while under warranty. PS5 disc drives are not designed for casual user repair.
