Roku Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Roku error codes look cryptic, but most fall into a few groups: network connection errors, weak Wi-Fi errors, channel-loading errors, or temporary server problems.

Write down the exact code, including decimals such as 014.40, before troubleshooting. Sub-codes can point to different causes.

Does this affect you?

Use this if a Roku TV or Roku streaming player shows an error code while loading a channel, updating, connecting, or playing content.

Match the code to the likely cause

  • 003, 004, 005: general network connectivity errors. Roku cannot reach the internet reliably.
  • 009: a channel or service could not load. It may be a channel glitch or server issue.
  • 014, 014.40, 014.30: Wi-Fi signal or router connection errors.
  • 016: content or channel data failed to load, often after an update.
  • 018 or 013: Roku account/server connection trouble, sometimes temporary.

If the code is not listed, search the exact number on Roku’s official support site.

Fix network-related codes

  1. Go to Settings > Network > Check connection.
  2. Confirm whether Roku can reach the router and the internet.
  3. Move the Roku closer to the router if signal is weak.
  4. Use Ethernet if the Roku model supports it.
  5. Restart the router by unplugging it for one minute.
  6. Restart Roku from Settings > System > Power > System restart, or unplug it for 30 seconds.
  7. Run the network check again.

Fix channel-loading codes

  1. Exit the channel and return to Home.
  2. Highlight the channel.
  3. Press the Star button.
  4. Choose Remove channel.
  5. Reinstall it from the Roku Channel Store.
  6. Sign in again and retry playback.

If the same channel throws the same code repeatedly, check whether that streaming service is down. The app’s servers may be the problem.

If codes keep returning

Check Settings > System > System update > Check now. A Roku OS update can fix unexplained app or channel errors after a service updates its channel.

Errors in the 018 or 013 range may come from Roku’s own servers. Search current reports before factory resetting. If many channels show errors and restarts do not help, a factory reset from Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset can clear corrupted settings, but it erases all channels and logins.
