If several Roku apps fail at once, the problem is usually the Roku device, Roku OS, storage, or network rather than one streaming service. If only one app fails, updating or reinstalling that channel is more likely.
These steps apply to Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices such as Express, Streaming Stick, and Ultra.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Roku channels will not open, freeze on loading, or crash back to the home screen.
Restart Roku properly
- Press Home to return to the Roku home screen.
- Go to Settings > System > Power > System restart. On some models, System restart is directly under System.
- Select Restart.
- If Roku is frozen, unplug the Roku or Roku TV from power for 30 seconds.
- After startup, open the problem app again.
Restarting clears stuck memory and is the most common fix for channels that will not open.
Update the channel and Roku OS
- Highlight the failing channel on the home screen.
- Press the Star button.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Repeat for other failing channels.
- Then go to Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- Install any Roku OS update and restart if prompted.
Channels and Roku OS update separately. A channel may need a newer Roku OS version before it launches correctly.
Check network and reinstall the app
- Go to Settings > Network > Check connection.
- If Wi-Fi is weak, move closer to the router, use 5GHz if available, or use Ethernet on supported models.
- To reinstall one channel, highlight it, press Star, choose Remove channel, then reinstall it from Streaming Channels.
- Open the channel and sign in again.
Reinstalling clears corrupted channel cache and local files that a restart may not remove.
If apps keep failing
Remove channels you do not use on lower-storage Roku models such as Roku Express or older Streaming Sticks. Too many channels can make the interface and apps unstable.
If HDMI-CEC seems involved, test Settings > System > Control other devices and turn CEC off temporarily. Use Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset only as a last step because it erases channels, logins, and settings.
