Upwork Account Suspended: How to Appeal It

An Upwork suspension can freeze proposals, messages, active contracts, milestones, and pending payments. The appeal should go through Upwork Trust & Safety or Support and should answer the specific category named in the notice.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Upwork freelancer or client accounts, including accounts asked to complete Talent Verification, when login or platform activity is blocked by a suspension.

Find out why the account was suspended

Upwork usually names a category even if the explanation is brief.

  1. Check the email attached to Upwork for a notice from Trust & Safety or Support.
  2. Try signing in and read any message shown on the login page or profile.
  3. Review recent messages for contact information or payment discussions outside Upwork. Even responding to a client’s off-platform request can trigger review.
  4. Check whether your Job Success Score dropped after canceled, disputed, or poorly handled contracts.
  5. Consider whether an unusual login location, multiple account issue, or Talent Verification request could explain the hold.

Submit an appeal to Upwork Trust & Safety

Use one support thread and keep the appeal specific.

  1. Open Upwork Help Center and create a ticket under account or suspension issues, or reply to the suspension email if replies are allowed.
  2. Include the account email, approximate suspension date, and a concise explanation of what you believe happened.
  3. If a contract is involved, include the contract or job title, invoice details, or saved message screenshots if you have them.
  4. If Talent Verification is required, complete the photo ID and live selfie steps through Upwork’s platform.
  5. Ask directly what happens to pending payments, active milestones, or contracts because those may be handled separately from reinstatement.
  6. Wait for a response, which may take days to a couple of weeks depending on complexity.

More control

Keep everything on Upwork

Do not share personal contact details or agree to direct payment before Upwork allows it. Clear, documented refusals help if a client tries to move off-platform.

Communicate early on contracts

Late delivery, scope disputes, silence, and cancellations can hurt account health over time. Tell clients early if a deadline or deliverable is at risk.

Do not create a second account

Upwork links accounts by identity, device, payment details, and behavior. A second account after suspension can become a separate violation.

Complete verification before it becomes urgent

Talent Verification is easier to handle before there is an active milestone or payment waiting on it.
