Venmo protects access tightly because the account can move money. A forgotten password, missing verification code, new device, or temporary lock can stop sign-in even when your account is otherwise normal.
Does this affect you?
Use this for the Venmo app on iPhone or Android and for Venmo in a browser at venmo.com. Normal recovery requires access to the phone number or email on the account.
Reset your password
This is the fastest fix when the password is rejected or forgotten.
- Open Venmo or go to venmo.com and choose Log In.
- Tap Forgot password below the sign-in fields.
- Enter the phone number or email address on the account.
- Wait for Venmo to send a verification code by text or email.
- Enter the code when it arrives.
- Create a new password and sign in with it.
If the verification code never arrives
Code delivery problems are common and usually fixable.
- Check the exact destination you selected. Venmo sends the code to the chosen phone or email, not automatically to both.
- For text codes, make sure you have cellular signal and that short-code messages are not blocked by your phone or carrier.
- For email codes, check spam and search the mailbox for Venmo.
- Wait a couple of minutes before requesting another code so you do not confuse an older code with the newest one.
- If the phone number or email is outdated, contact Venmo Support to verify identity and update the contact information.
More control
New devices can trigger verification
A new phone, new browser, reinstalled app, VPN, or unusual location can cause extra identity checks. That is fraud prevention, not proof that the password is wrong.
Stop guessing after repeated failures
Several wrong attempts can create a temporary lock. Reset the password instead of continuing to try old versions.
Check for compromise
If you see unfamiliar payments, changed contact details, or messages you did not send, review Settings > Devices, remove sessions you do not recognize, change the password, and contact Venmo Support about unauthorized activity.
