Can’t Sign Into Outlook or Hotmail? Here’s How to Fix It

Outlook and Hotmail sign-in failures usually mean either the password is not being accepted or Microsoft has flagged the sign-in attempt for extra verification. The wording on the screen tells you which path to use.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Microsoft account email addresses ending in Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live.com, MSN, or similar, whether you sign in through a browser, Outlook app, or Windows Mail.

Password rejected, but you are sure it is correct

Check simple causes before resetting.

  1. Make sure Caps Lock is off.
  2. If copying a password, check that you are not adding a space before or after it.
  3. Confirm the exact Microsoft account address or primary alias you are using.
  4. Try another browser, a private window, or the Outlook mobile app to rule out a stuck page or bad autofill.
  5. If it still fails, use Forgot password instead of continuing to guess. Too many attempts can trigger a security lock.

Unusual activity or verification loop

This means Microsoft wants stronger proof before letting the sign-in continue.

  1. Try from a device and network you normally use. New countries, VPNs, and unfamiliar Wi-Fi can trigger checks.
  2. Choose a verification method you can still access: recovery phone, recovery email, or Microsoft Authenticator.
  3. If those methods are unavailable, complete Microsoft’s account recovery questionnaire as accurately as possible.
  4. Submit it and wait. Review can take minutes or up to a couple of days depending on what Microsoft can verify.
  5. Avoid repeated rapid retries while the review is pending.

More control

Work and school accounts are different

If the sign-in page mentions your organization or Microsoft 365 work account, recovery may need your company or school IT admin rather than the personal account tools at account.microsoft.com.

Clear stuck browser sessions

A sign-in page that loops without processing can be caused by cached cookies. Clear cookies for outlook.com and live.com, or use a private window.

Keep security info current

Open account.microsoft.com > Security info after you regain access and update the recovery email, phone, authenticator, and two-step verification settings. Also set your device clock to automatic so time-based codes do not fail.
