Firefox can bring bookmarks from another browser without rebuilding them by hand. If the source browser is installed on the same computer, Firefox can import directly. If not, export bookmarks as an HTML file first and import that file.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Firefox on Windows or Mac when switching from Chrome, Safari, Edge, or another browser and you want existing bookmarks to come along.
Import directly from an installed browser
Use Firefox Import Data when the other browser is on the same computer.
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button.
- Open Settings.
- On the General panel, find Import browser data.
- Click Import Data.
- Choose the browser to import from and click Continue.
- Select Bookmarks and any optional data such as history or saved passwords.
- Click Continue, then Finish.
On Mac, File > Import from Another Browser opens the same style of import wizard.
Import from an exported HTML bookmarks file
Use this when bookmarks come from another computer or a browser Firefox cannot read directly.
- Export bookmarks from the old browser as an HTML file. In Chrome or Edge, use Bookmark Manager > three-dot menu > Export bookmarks. In Safari, use File > Export > Bookmarks.
- Save the file somewhere easy to find.
- In Firefox, open the Bookmarks Library with Ctrl+Shift+O on Windows or Cmd+Shift+O on Mac.
- Click Import and Backup.
- Choose Import Bookmarks from HTML.
- Select the exported file and open it.
More control
Find imported bookmarks
Imported bookmarks usually land in a folder inside Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar. Press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows or Cmd+Shift+B on Mac if the bookmarks toolbar is hidden.
Remove duplicates manually
Firefox does not automatically deduplicate bookmarks if you import the same file twice. Open the Library and delete the duplicate imported folder.
Make a backup first
Before a large import, open Library > Import and Backup > Backup and save a copy. If the import is messy, restore from that backup.
