Switching to Chrome does not automatically move bookmarks from your old browser. Chrome can import directly from other browsers installed on the same computer, or it can read a bookmarks HTML file exported from another device or browser.

Use this for Google Chrome on Windows or Mac when you want to bring in bookmarks from Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, or a bookmarks HTML export.
Import directly from another browser on the same computer
This is easiest when the old browser is still installed.
- Open Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Choose Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings.
- Select the browser you want from the dropdown.
- Check Bookmarks, and optionally History, Saved passwords, or Autofill data.
- Click Import.
- Open Bookmark manager with Ctrl+Shift+O on Windows or Cmd+Shift+O on Mac to review the imported folder.
Chrome usually places imported bookmarks in a folder named Imported from followed by the browser name.
Import from an exported HTML bookmarks file
Use this when the other browser is not installed on this computer.
- Export bookmarks from the old browser as an HTML file. In Firefox, use Manage Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML. In Safari, use File > Export > Bookmarks.
- Save the HTML file somewhere easy to find.
- In Chrome, open Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings.
- Choose Bookmarks HTML File from the dropdown.
- Click Choose File and open the exported file.
- Review the new Imported folder in Bookmark manager.
More control
Reorganize after import
Chrome does not know where you want imported folders to live. Open Bookmark manager and drag bookmarks or folders into your preferred bookmarks bar structure.
Passwords may need extra access
Chrome can import some passwords if the source browser allows it. Safari passwords on Mac may require Keychain approval before they transfer.
Remove duplicates manually
If you import the same bookmarks twice, Chrome creates duplicate folders instead of merging them. Delete the extra imported folder from Bookmark manager.
Export if you switch back
Browsers do not sync bookmarks with each other automatically. To move away from Chrome later, use Bookmark manager > three-dot menu > Export bookmarks.
