Linksys routers ship with a default login path so you can open the settings page for the first time. If the default was changed and nobody remembers it, a factory reset is usually the way back in.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers and older classic Linksys models when you need the admin address, username, or password.
Log in with default details
Try this first if the router has not been customized.
- Connect to the Linksys Wi-Fi network or plug in with Ethernet.
- Open 192.168.1.1 in a browser. Newer models may also use linksyssmartwifi.com or myrouter.local.
- If a login appears, leave the username blank on many older models and use admin as the password.
- If that fails, check the router bottom or back label for a unique default password.
- After login, use the dashboard to change Wi-Fi settings, view devices, or update router settings.
If the page will not load, make sure the device is connected to the Linksys network and not another router, guest network, or cellular data.
Find access if the password was changed
A custom admin password replaces the factory default.
- Check password managers, notes, or paperwork near the router.
- If you use the Linksys app, sign in with the Linksys cloud account. Router settings in the app may let you view or reset admin access.
- If no one knows the password and the app is not set up, plan for a factory reset.
Reset if you are locked out
This erases all custom settings, including Wi-Fi details.
- Find the recessed Reset button on the back or bottom.
- With the router powered on, hold Reset about 10 seconds until lights flash or cycle.
- Wait one to two minutes for restart.
- Log in with the default address and password.
- Reconnect using the factory Wi-Fi printed on the label and rebuild custom settings.
More control
Change the admin password after login
Open Administration or Router Settings > Administration and set a strong admin password. Leaving it as admin lets anyone on Wi-Fi reach router settings.
Store it somewhere private
A password manager or private note prevents another factory reset later.
Find the gateway if defaults fail
On Windows, run ipconfig and check Default Gateway. On Mac, open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details and check Router.
