Laptop Will Not Connect to Wi-Fi? Here is How to Fix It

Laptop unable to connect to Wi-Fi network

When every other device connects but one laptop will not, the problem is usually local to that laptop. It may be a disabled radio, driver issue, saved-network problem, power setting, VPN conflict, or failing Wi-Fi hardware.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Windows laptops and MacBooks that cannot see Wi-Fi, cannot join one network, keep dropping, or have a missing Wi-Fi toggle.

Rule out the basics

Quick checks fix more laptop Wi-Fi problems than they should.

  1. Look for a physical Wi-Fi switch or function key, often Fn plus a key with an antenna icon.
  2. On Windows, open Settings > Network & internet and confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
  3. On Mac, use the menu bar or System Settings to confirm Wi-Fi is on.
  4. Fully restart the laptop, not just sleep and wake.
  5. Try a different network such as a phone hotspot. If that works, the issue is likely the saved home-network setup on this laptop.

Update or reinstall the Wi-Fi driver

This is especially common after Windows updates.

  • Windows: right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter, and choose Update driver > Search automatically. If that fails, choose Uninstall device and restart so Windows reinstalls it.
  • Mac: open System Settings > General > Software Update and install pending updates. Mac Wi-Fi driver fixes arrive through macOS updates. Then forget the problem network and reconnect.

Reset the network adapter

Use this when updates and forgetting the network do not help.

  • Windows 11: open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, then click Reset now.
  • Windows 10: open Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
  • Mac: remove and re-add the Wi-Fi service where available, and check Hardware and TCP/IP tabs are automatic rather than manual.

More control

Disable Windows power saving for Wi-Fi

In Device Manager, open the wireless adapter Properties > Power Management and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

VPN and security tools can interfere

VPN apps, corporate management tools, and third-party firewalls can override normal Wi-Fi behavior. Temporarily disable them for testing.

Test for hardware failure

If the laptop sees no Wi-Fi networks at all and a USB Wi-Fi adapter works instantly, the internal wireless card or antenna may need repair.
