An HP inkjet estimates ink level from the cartridge chip and usage counts. If the chip is not read cleanly or the counter is out of sync, the printer may treat a full cartridge as empty.
Does this affect you?
Use this if an HP OfficeJet, ENVY, or DeskJet says a cartridge is empty even though it is new, recently replaced, or visibly has ink.
Reseat the cartridge
A cartridge can look installed while not being fully clicked into the carriage.
- Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
- Press the flagged cartridge gently until it releases.
- Remove it completely.
- Insert it again firmly until it clicks into the correct slot.
- Close the door, wait for the self-check, and print a test page.
Clean the cartridge contacts
Dust, dried ink, or skin oil on the contacts can cause a false empty reading.
- Remove the cartridge and locate the gold or copper contacts.
- Wipe them gently with a dry lint-free cloth, or a cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water.
- Let the cartridge dry fully for a minute.
- Wipe the matching carriage contacts inside the printer with the same care.
- Reinstall the cartridge and test again.
Update the printer firmware
Firmware updates can fix false readings for newer chip revisions.
- Open Setup, Tools, Printer Maintenance, or similar on the printer.
- Choose Update Firmware or Check for Updates.
- Install any available update without interrupting power or Wi-Fi.
- Try printing again after the printer restarts.
More control
HP blocks printing to protect the printhead
Running a dry printhead can damage it quickly, so the printer stops when it believes ink is empty.
Third-party cartridges misread more often
Refilled and non-HP cartridges may report levels differently from original HP chips. The printer may reject them even when full.
A new original cartridge can still be faulty
If a brand-new HP cartridge keeps reading empty after these steps, contact HP or the retailer for replacement.
