You see visible stripes or steps where a smooth gradient should appear, often in sunsets, dark scenes, skies, or solid-color backgrounds. This applies to external monitors and laptop displays connected through HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C on Windows and Mac.

Does This Affect You?

Color banding usually means the display chain is sending less color information than expected, using limited range, or compressing color detail through chroma subsampling. Sometimes the content or panel itself is the limit.

Fix Color Depth and Chroma Subsampling

Start with the graphics output format.

  1. On Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor, and open Advanced display. Check bit depth and color format.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Software, or Intel Graphics Command Center.
  3. Set output color format to RGB or YCbCr 4:4:4 instead of YCbCr 4:2:0.
  4. Set output dynamic range to Full rather than Limited, especially if dark scenes show obvious steps.
  5. On Mac, check System Settings > Displays for available color profiles or format options, though Macs commonly use full RGB over modern DisplayPort and HDMI.

Check the Cable, Port, and Refresh Rate

Bandwidth limits can force reduced color.

  1. Use a cable rated for the resolution and refresh rate. Older HDMI cables and ports may not carry 4K at 60Hz or high-refresh modes with full color.
  2. Try DisplayPort 1.4 or a certified modern HDMI cable if the monitor supports it.
  3. Lower refresh rate slightly, such as from 144Hz to 120Hz, and see whether banding improves.
  4. Try another port on the monitor and graphics card.
  5. Bypass docks, hubs, KVMs, and USB-C adapters temporarily because they can cap color format even when the monitor and cable are capable.

Some graphics drivers include dithering options that reduce visible banding on 8-bit output. Also check the monitor menu: sharpness set too high, dynamic contrast, local dimming, HDR tone processing, or low-blue-light modes can exaggerate banding.

Budget panels may process color at 6-bit plus dithering or basic 8-bit, so some banding can remain even with correct RGB/full-range settings. Test with a grayscale gradient image full screen to separate a system-wide display issue from a compressed video or image that already contains banding.
