
You are shopping for a keyboard and mechanical models are advertised as better, but it is not obvious what changes compared with a normal membrane keyboard. This guide focuses on desktop keyboards for typing, office work, and gaming. Laptop keyboards usually use scissor-switch designs and are a separate category.
Does This Affect You?
The difference is underneath each key. A membrane keyboard uses rubber domes over a circuit layer. A mechanical keyboard uses an individual switch with its own spring and moving parts. That changes feel, sound, durability, repairability, and price.
What Is Physically Different

- Membrane keyboards use a rubber dome sheet. Pressing a key collapses the dome onto a circuit layer. They are inexpensive, quiet, and often feel soft or mushy.
- Mechanical keyboards use a separate switch for every key. Each switch has a defined actuation point, which creates a more consistent key feel.
- Switch type matters. Linear switches press smoothly, tactile switches add a small bump, and clicky switches add both a bump and a loud click.
- Durability usually favors mechanical. Mechanical switches are often rated for tens of millions of presses. Membrane boards can last years but often feel worse as the rubber sheet wears.
- Repairability favors mechanical. Hot-swap boards can replace one bad switch easily, while membrane boards are usually replaced as a whole.
Which to Actually Buy
Choose based on feel, noise, budget, and workload.
- For low-cost general office use, membrane is practical, quiet, and good enough.
- For gaming, mechanical linear switches are popular because the actuation is consistent and the board handles repeated presses well.
- For heavy typing, many people like tactile mechanical switches, though preference is personal.
- For shared offices, avoid loud clicky switches unless everyone nearby is truly okay with the sound. Quiet membrane or quieter linear/tactile mechanical switches are safer.
- If possible, test switches before buying. A switch tester, store demo, or friend keyboard tells you more than a spec sheet.
Low-profile mechanical keyboards use shorter switches to feel closer to laptop-style typing while keeping mechanical actuation. Hybrid “mechanical-feel” membrane keyboards can be a cheaper middle ground, but they usually do not match true mechanical durability or consistency.
Even two linear switches can feel and sound different because of spring weight, housing material, stabilizers, keycaps, and lubrication. If sound matters, watch typing tests for the exact switch and keyboard model.
