Monitor Ghosting? How to Fix Blurry Motion Trails

Fast-moving objects leave a faint smear behind them: the mouse cursor trails, scrolling text blurs, or game motion looks dirty instead of clean. This applies to LCD monitors, including gaming monitors, especially panels with slower response times.

Does This Affect You?

Ghosting happens when monitor pixels cannot change color fast enough before the next frame arrives. The previous image lingers briefly and creates a soft trail. Most monitors include an overdrive or response-time setting designed specifically to reduce this.

Turn On or Adjust Overdrive in the Monitor Menu

Use the monitor physical buttons or joystick, not Windows settings.

  1. Open the monitor on-screen display menu.
  2. Look for Overdrive, OD, Response Time, Trace Free, AMA, or a similar motion setting.
  3. If it is off or low, choose the middle setting first, often called Normal or Medium.
  4. Test by dragging the mouse quickly, scrolling a page, or moving in a fast game scene.
  5. If trails remain, try one level higher, but avoid jumping straight to the maximum because that can cause overshoot.

Rule Out Other Causes

If overdrive does not help, check the rest of the display chain.

  • Set the monitor to its proper refresh rate. Running below the panel maximum can make motion look choppier and smearier.
  • Try another overdrive level rather than simply turning it off. Off often brings back the strongest blur.
  • Update the graphics driver, especially if the problem started after a Windows update.
  • Swap HDMI or DisplayPort cables if artifacts appear at high resolution or refresh rate.
  • Disable G-Sync or FreeSync temporarily. Some monitors ghost more at certain frame rates with VRR active.

Ghosting is a soft trailing smear. Overshoot, also called inverse ghosting, is a sharp bright or dark halo caused by overdrive being too aggressive. If a higher overdrive level looks worse, dial it back.

Some VA panels, especially cheaper ones, have slower dark transitions than IPS or TN panels. A little residual ghosting can be a hardware limitation rather than a fault. When shopping, trust independent measured response-time and overshoot reviews more than best-case “1ms” marketing claims.
