What MHz and CL Mean

  • MHz indicates the rated transfer speed or bandwidth. Higher usually means more data can move per second.
  • CL, or CAS latency, is the number of clock cycles before memory responds. Lower is better.
  • Real latency depends on both numbers, so a higher MHz kit with a higher CL can feel similar to a lower MHz kit with tighter timings.
  • A rough comparison is CL divided by MHz divided by 2000, which gives a latency-style comparison in nanoseconds.

When Faster RAM Helps

  • With a dedicated graphics card, many games gain only a small single-digit improvement.
  • With integrated graphics, RAM speed matters more because system RAM is also video memory.
  • AMD Ryzen desktops often benefit more from faster RAM within the supported range.
  • For web, office, and general productivity, total RAM capacity usually matters more than MHz.

Enable the Rated Speed

Many RAM kits run slower until you enable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, or a memory profile in BIOS/UEFI. This is reversible and does not change files or Windows. Avoid voltage or overclocking settings if you only want the rated memory profile.

Mixed Kits and Value

If two sticks have different speeds or timings, the system usually runs both at the slower common setting. Matched kits are tested together.
