A dock that lights one monitor, mirrors both monitors, or refuses to extend across two screens is usually hitting a hardware limit, a dock technology requirement, a cable issue, or a Windows display setting.
These steps apply to USB-C, Thunderbolt, DisplayLink, MST, and proprietary docks connected to Windows laptops with two external monitors.

Use this if a dock works for charging or USB devices but does not drive two independent displays.
Confirm Dual-Monitor Support
- Check the exact laptop model specs for how many external displays the graphics chip supports.
- Check the dock manual for MST or DisplayLink support.
- If the dock uses DisplayLink, install DisplayLink software from the official site.
- Connect one monitor at a time to each dock video port to confirm the ports work individually.
Fix Windows Display Settings and Connections
- Right-click the desktop and open Display settings.
- Under Multiple displays, choose Extend these displays instead of Duplicate.
- Click Detect if a monitor is missing.
- Reseat both monitor cables at the dock.
- Reseat the dock cable at the laptop USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
- Swap monitor cables between dock ports to see whether the problem follows a port, cable, or monitor.
Update Drivers and Firmware
Updating display or dock software may briefly disconnect screens. It should not affect your files.
- Update the graphics driver from Device Manager or the laptop maker.
- Update DisplayLink Manager if the dock uses DisplayLink.
- Check the dock maker site for firmware for the exact dock model.
- Restart the laptop with the dock and both monitors connected.
Technical Limits to Know
- Some dual-monitor docks can only mirror unless MST or DisplayLink is supported.
- Two 4K 60Hz monitors can exceed a single USB-C connection bandwidth. Lower one monitor to 1440p or 30Hz as a test.
- If one dock video port never works with any cable or monitor, that port may have failed.
