Drawing Tablet Not Detected? How to Fix It on Windows or Mac

Drawing tablet not detected troubleshooting illustration

A drawing tablet that does not move the cursor, fails to appear in its driver, or works in one app but not another is usually dealing with a connection, driver, permission, or pen compatibility issue.

These steps apply to USB and Bluetooth graphics tablets from Wacom, Huion, XP-Pen, and similar brands on Windows and Mac.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if the tablet is plugged in but not recognized, the pen does nothing, or Bluetooth pairing never completes.

Check Connection Basics

  1. Plug the tablet directly into a built-in laptop port or rear desktop motherboard port. Avoid hubs while testing.
  2. Try another USB cable if the cable is removable.
  3. Check the tablet status LED. No light usually means no power or a bad cable/port.
  4. For battery pens, replace or charge the pen battery. For battery-free pens, use the exact pen for that tablet model.
  5. For Bluetooth tablets, charge the tablet, remove old paired entries, and pair fresh.

Install or Repair the Driver

  1. Download the driver for the exact tablet model from Wacom, Huion, XP-Pen, or the maker support site.
  2. Uninstall old tablet drivers first, especially drivers from another brand.
  3. Restart before installing the new driver.
  4. Install the driver and restart again.
  5. Open the tablet control panel and check whether it sees the tablet.

Fix Mac Permissions

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy and Security > Accessibility.
  2. Enable the tablet driver app, such as Wacom Desktop Center or the Huion/XP-Pen driver.
  3. If missing, add it from Applications.
  4. Also check Privacy and Security > Input Monitoring.
  5. Quit and reopen the driver app after changing permissions.

App and Hardware Checks

  • If the pen works on the desktop but not in Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, or another app, check that app tablet input settings.
  • Try the tablet on another computer with the official driver.
  • If the status light never appears on any cable, port, or computer, the tablet connector or electronics may have failed. Check warranty before replacing it.
