A custom ringtone that does not play usually means the setting did not save, the audio file is unsupported, the file is in the wrong location, or a contact-specific ringtone is overriding the default.
These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other Android phones running recent Android versions.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your phone plays the default ringtone, plays no sound, or only one contact rings differently after you chose a custom sound.
Set or Reset the Default Ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration or Sound & vibration.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Select another ringtone briefly, then select your custom ringtone again.
- If the file is missing, tap Add ringtone or the plus button and choose the audio file manually.
- Back out of Settings and test with an incoming call.
Check Contact-Specific Ringtones
- Open Phone or Contacts.
- Choose the contact that rings incorrectly.
- Tap Edit.
- Find the contact ringtone field.
- Choose your custom sound or select Default ringtone so the contact follows the phone-wide setting.
If only one person triggers the wrong sound, this override is the likely cause.
Check the Audio File
Use a Supported Format
Android generally handles MP3, M4A, and OGG well for ringtones. If the file is unusual, convert it to MP3 and add it again.
Place It in the Ringtones Folder
Move the audio file into the internal storage folder named Ringtones using Files or a computer. Files stored there appear more reliably in ringtone pickers.
Check Silent and DND
Make sure Do Not Disturb, silent mode, and vibrate-only mode are off when testing. A correct ringtone setting cannot play through a muted phone.
Raise Ringtone Volume
Android separates media, ringtone, notification, and alarm volume. Raise the ringtone slider in sound settings or from the expanded volume panel while the phone is idle.
