Common Pixel 6a Problems and How to Fix Them

Common Google Pixel 6a problems illustration

The Pixel 6a uses a Tensor chip in a smaller body, so heat, battery behavior, and fingerprint reliability can feel different from larger phones. Most common Pixel 6a issues are software-related or setting-related before they are repair problems.

These fixes apply specifically to the Google Pixel 6a, though some steps also help other Pixel models.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if a Pixel 6a overheats, drains quickly, restarts unexpectedly, has Wi-Fi reconnect issues, or struggles to read fingerprints.

Overheating During Charging or Camera Use

  1. Remove the case while charging, especially thick or magnetic cases.
  2. Charge on a hard, cool surface instead of a bed, couch, dashboard, or direct sunlight.
  3. Open Settings > System > System update and install updates.
  4. For long camera sessions, use shorter clips or 1080p video instead of long 4K recording.

The smaller body has less room to spread heat, so demanding camera use and charging can warm the phone more noticeably.

Battery Draining Faster Than Expected

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Tap Battery usage and look for apps using more power than expected.
  3. Update the phone from System update.
  4. Turn on Adaptive Battery under Battery settings.
  5. Update or reinstall apps with unusually high background battery use.

Fingerprint Sensor Problems

  1. Remove or replace generic thick screen protectors with Pixel-compatible ones.
  2. Clean and dry both the screen and your finger.
  3. Open Settings > Security > Fingerprint.
  4. Delete existing fingerprints.
  5. Register them again while placing the finger flat over the whole sensor area.
  6. Add the same finger more than once from slightly different angles if the phone allows it.

Other Pixel 6a Notes

Random Restarts

Unexpected restarts on the Pixel 6a have often been tied to specific builds. Keep the phone updated; if restarts continue afterward, contact Google support.

Wi-Fi Reconnect Issues

If Wi-Fi is slow to reconnect after leaving and returning, forget the network in Wi-Fi settings and join it again with the password.

Warranty Support

If the phone gets hot while idle, drains badly after all updates, or the fingerprint sensor still fails after re-registering, use Google support. Warranty repairs should go through Google or authorized channels.
