Do Not Disturb Not Working on Android: How to Fix It

Fixing Android Do Not Disturb illustration

Do Not Disturb is supposed to allow exceptions when you choose them. If calls, apps, or messages still break through, the most likely cause is an exception, schedule, or priority notification setting that is broader than you intended.

These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if the phone still rings, buzzes, lights up, or shows alerts while Do Not Disturb is supposed to be active.

Check What Is Allowed Through

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration or Sound & vibration.
  3. Open Do Not Disturb.
  4. Tap Exceptions, Allowed notifications, or a similar option.
  5. Review calls, messages, conversations, alarms, and apps.
  6. Change calls from anyone or all contacts to a narrower option if needed.
  7. Remove apps that should not interrupt.
  8. Test with a call or message while Do Not Disturb is on.

Alarms are commonly allowed by design. Decide carefully before blocking anything that could matter in an emergency.

Make Sure DND Is Actually Active

  1. Swipe down to Quick Settings.
  2. Check whether the Do Not Disturb tile is highlighted.
  3. Tap it on if you expected it to be active now.
  4. Open DND schedules in Settings.
  5. Confirm the days and hours match what you intended.

A schedule only applies during its exact window. It does not mean Do Not Disturb is on all day unless you configured it that way.

Look for Other Modes and Priority Rules

Bedtime and Focus Modes

Digital Wellbeing, Bedtime Mode, and Focus Mode can layer their own rules over Do Not Disturb. Check those settings if behavior seems inconsistent.

App Notification Importance

Some app channels may be marked high priority. Open the app notification settings and lower the importance if one app keeps breaking through.

Repeat Callers

Repeat caller exceptions can ring the second call from the same number within a short period, often around 15 minutes. Turn this off in call exceptions if you do not want it.

Vibration vs. Notifications

If the phone is silent but still vibrates, check DND vibration settings and touch/haptic feedback. You may be feeling system haptics instead of notification buzzes.
