Wallet problems can involve the app itself, a missing card, a pass that will not update, or the side button not opening Apple Pay. The best fix depends on whether Wallet is broken generally or one item inside Wallet is the issue.
These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions such as iOS 17 and iOS 18. If a card is specifically declined at checkout, the bank, card, or merchant may be the issue even when Wallet opens normally.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if Wallet will not open, freezes, does not appear when you double-click the side button, or a card, ticket, boarding pass, or ID is missing or stuck.
Fix the Wallet App Itself
- Force-close Wallet from the App Switcher by swiping up on its app card.
- Open Wallet again from the Home Screen or App Library.
- Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Confirm at least one card is added. An empty Wallet may not open the payment screen from the side button.
- Restart the iPhone from Settings > General > Shut Down, then turn it back on.
- Check Settings > General > Software Update for an iOS update.
Fix a Missing Card or Stale Pass
- Open Wallet and tap the plus button to re-add a missing debit or credit card.
- Follow bank verification steps, which may require the bank app, a code, or a support approval.
- If a card will not add, confirm the bank and card support Apple Pay.
- For a boarding pass, ticket, or loyalty pass that will not update, confirm the issuing app is installed, signed in, and online.
- If a pass disappeared, check whether it expired after a flight, event, or use date.
Wallet passes are often controlled by the airline, store, bank, school, or organization that issued them. Apple provides the Wallet container, but the issuer supplies the pass data.
Reset Wallet and Apple Pay Settings
- Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap each card and choose Remove This Card. This does not cancel the physical card.
- Open Settings > your name and sign out of your Apple account.
- Wait a minute, then sign back in.
- Re-add cards in Wallet.
- If multiple cards still fail after this, contact Apple Support because the account may need server-side help.
Use this reset only after simpler app, card, pass, and update checks. Re-adding cards can take a few minutes because banks often require verification.

Side Button from Lock Screen
Double-click Side Button can open Wallet from the Lock Screen, then Face ID or Touch ID confirms payment. If that shortcut fails, make sure Double-Click Side Button is enabled and biometric unlock works elsewhere.
Wallet Stores More Than Cards
Wallet can hold boarding passes, tickets, loyalty cards, IDs, hotel keys, transit cards, and more. Each type may update and expire differently.
If Tap to Pay Fails
If Wallet opens and the card is visible but the terminal will not read it, remove thick or metal cases and hold the top edge of the iPhone closer to the reader. The terminal may also be the problem.
