iPhone Wireless Charging Not Working: How to Fix It

Fixing iPhone wireless charging illustration

Wireless charging depends on close alignment between the charging coil in the iPhone and the coil in the pad or MagSafe puck. A small offset, thick case, metal accessory, weak power adapter, or uncertified charger can stop charging completely.

These steps apply to iPhone 8 and later for Qi wireless charging and iPhone 12 and later for MagSafe, running recent iOS versions.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if your iPhone shows no charging icon, makes no charging sound, or the battery percentage does not move after you place it on a wireless charger.

Check Alignment, Case, and Placement

  1. Remove the iPhone case and try charging with the bare phone first.
  2. Center the phone on the charging pad. With MagSafe, you should feel the magnetic snap into position.
  3. Remove anything between the phone and charger, including credit cards, IDs, wallet attachments, grips, or metal plates.
  4. Watch the Lock Screen for the lightning bolt or charging animation before walking away.

Cases that look harmless can still block charging if they are too thick, include metal, or have magnets that do not line up correctly.

Confirm the Charger Is Powered Correctly

  1. Plug the wireless charger into a wall adapter with enough power. MagSafe needs a 20 W or higher USB-C adapter for full speed.
  2. Avoid weak computer USB ports when testing.
  3. Check the charger or packaging for Qi or MagSafe certification.
  4. Try another wireless charger if possible.
  5. Try wired charging with a cable. If wired charging also fails, the issue may be the charging port, battery, cable, or phone hardware.

Restart and Check Charging Behavior

  1. Restart the iPhone from Settings > General > Shut Down, then turn it back on.
  2. Watch for an alert such as This accessory may not be supported.
  3. Clean the back of the iPhone and the charger surface with a soft, dry cloth.
  4. Open Settings > Battery and remember that Optimized Battery Charging can intentionally pause near 80 percent.

Extra Charging Notes

MagSafe vs. Qi

MagSafe uses magnets to align the phone and can charge supported iPhones faster than plain Qi. Standard Qi chargers can work, but they depend on careful placement and are usually slower.

Wired Is Still Faster

For a quick top-up, a good USB-C or Lightning cable with a proper adapter is usually faster than wireless charging.

Test Without the Case

If charging only works with the case removed, replace the case with one clearly marked MagSafe-compatible or wireless-charging compatible.
