iPhone storage and iCloud storage are separate. One is the physical space built into the phone. The other is cloud space tied to your Apple account. Similar names make them easy to mix up, but they are managed in different places.
This applies to all iPhones. Your iOS version may change wording slightly, but the two storage pools remain separate.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your iPhone says storage is full while iCloud shows room left, or iCloud says it is full while the iPhone still has space. The fix depends on which storage pool the warning names.
What iPhone Storage Is
- iPhone storage is the built-in memory you chose when you bought the device, such as 128 GB or 256 GB.
- It holds installed apps, local photos and videos, offline music, message attachments, downloaded files, iOS, and system data.
- You can check it under Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- This capacity does not change when you buy iCloud+.
When the phone cannot take photos or update apps because storage is full, it usually means physical iPhone storage is low.
What iCloud Storage Is
- iCloud storage is space on Apple servers tied to your Apple account.
- It stores iCloud backups, iCloud Photos if enabled, iCloud Drive files, iCloud Mail, and app data that syncs through iCloud.
- You can check it under Settings > your name > iCloud.
- Everyone starts with 5 GB free, and larger iCloud+ plans are separate purchases.
Because iCloud storage belongs to your Apple account, the same pool can be shared by your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other signed-in Apple devices.
Check Both Screens
- For device space, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- For cloud space, open Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage.
- Read the exact wording of the warning. If it says iCloud storage, manage backups, Photos, Drive, Mail, or upgrade the plan. If it says iPhone storage, offload apps or remove local files.
How They Interact
Optimize iPhone Storage
With iCloud Photos on, Optimize iPhone Storage can keep smaller photo versions locally and store originals in iCloud. This saves device space but uses more iCloud storage.
iCloud Full Does Not Stop Local Photos
If iCloud is full, the iPhone can still take photos locally if device storage is available. What stops is iCloud backup and sync until cloud space is freed or upgraded.
Deleting with iCloud Photos Syncs Everywhere
When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting a photo on the iPhone also removes it from iCloud and other synced devices. It is not just deleting a local copy.
