A black camera preview, frozen shutter, or blurry image does not automatically mean the iPhone camera is broken. Many camera problems are caused by a stuck app, a dirty lens, a case blocking the lens, or a temporary iOS issue.
These steps apply to front and rear cameras on iPhones running recent iOS versions, including iOS 17 and iOS 18.

Use this if Camera opens to a black or gray screen, refuses to focus, crashes, or freezes when you try to take a photo. Start with the simple app and lens checks before assuming hardware failure.
Force-Close and Reopen Camera
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
- Find the Camera app card in the App Switcher.
- Swipe the Camera card up and off the screen.
- Return to the Home Screen.
- Open Camera again and wait a few seconds for the preview to appear.
This is the fastest fix for a camera session that opened badly or froze while another app was using camera hardware.
Check for a Dirty or Blocked Lens
- Look at the rear lenses and front camera area under good light.
- Wipe the glass gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
- Avoid tissue, paper towels, or rough fabric that can scratch or leave lint.
- Remove the case and any lens protector if the picture still looks hazy or partly blocked.
- Open Camera again and check focus on a well-lit subject.
Smudges, pocket lint, cracked lens covers, and case lips can all look like a software focus problem.
Restart the iPhone
- Hold the side button and either volume button until the power slider appears.
- Slide to power off.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- After startup, open Camera and test photo and video again.
A restart clears stuck background processes that can keep camera hardware in a bad state even after you close the app.
Additional Camera Checks
Install iOS Updates
Open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple often fixes camera-related bugs in iOS updates, especially after major releases.
Test Another App
Open another camera-using app such as a QR scanner, video call app, or social app. If every app shows the same black preview, the problem is system-wide. If only one app fails, reinstall or update that app.
Check Screen Time Restrictions
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure Camera is allowed. Family or school restrictions can disable it quietly.
Know the Hardware Signs
If the preview is black in every app after cleaning, restarting, and updating, or every photo has a dark patch or discoloration, the camera module or display hardware may need service.
