An iPhone can be running even while the display stays completely black. If you hear notifications, feel vibration, or Siri responds, the phone is not fully dead; the screen or system may simply be frozen.
These steps apply to recent iPhones running iOS 17 or iOS 18 when the screen remains dark but the device still shows signs of life.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the display is black but the iPhone rings, vibrates, flashes, connects to a charger, or responds to Siri. This pattern is often a software freeze or display issue rather than total device failure.
Force Restart the iPhone
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Keep holding even while the screen stays black.
- Release the button only when the Apple logo appears, which can take 20 to 30 seconds.
This button sequence also works on iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation. Much older iPhones use different restart combinations, but those models are outside this guide.
Charge It and Check Brightness
- Plug the iPhone into a wall charger with a reliable cable and adapter.
- Leave it charging for at least 15 to 30 minutes.
- Ask Siri something simple, such as the time. If Siri answers, the iPhone is on.
- If Siri works, try opening Control Center by feel and dragging the brightness slider upward.
- After charging, try the force restart again if the screen is still black.
A deeply drained battery can take a while before anything appears. A display set extremely dim can also look dead in bright light.
Use Recovery Mode with a Computer
- On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Windows PC or older Mac, open iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone with a cable.
- Press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button.
- Keep holding past the Apple logo until the recovery mode screen appears.
- When Finder or iTunes offers options, choose Update first to reinstall iOS without erasing data.
- If Update finishes and the screen still stays black, hardware is more likely.
Choose Update before Restore when possible. Restore erases the device, while Update tries to reinstall iOS while preserving data.
When It Is Probably Hardware
Drops and Water Matter
If the phone was recently dropped or exposed to liquid, and it still vibrates or rings with a black screen, the display or internal display connector may be damaged. Software cannot repair that.
Backups May Still Run
If the iPhone is unlocked by Face ID and on Wi-Fi, automatic iCloud backup may still happen in the background. Once the display is repaired, check the backup date before making any erase decisions.
Dim or Flickering Is Different
If the image is faint or flickering instead of fully black, the display may be failing but still usable enough for emergency navigation. Siri can sometimes turn on AssistiveTouch if physical buttons are also unreliable.
Book a Repair Check
If force restart, charging, and recovery mode do not restore the display, arrange an Apple or authorized service inspection and check warranty or AppleCare coverage first.
