
An iPhone can get warm during normal use, especially while charging, gaming, recording video, navigating, or making video calls. It becomes a problem when it feels uncomfortably hot, dims the display, slows down, or shows a temperature warning.
These steps apply to any iPhone model, especially in hot weather, direct sunlight, cars, heavy apps, and charging situations.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the phone feels hot to hold, performance drops, the screen dims by itself, or you see a message saying the iPhone needs to cool down. iOS reduces performance to protect the battery and internal parts when temperature rises too far.
Cool It Down Right Now
- Take the iPhone out of its case. Thick cases trap heat.
- Close demanding apps such as games, navigation, video calls, or camera recording. Open the App Switcher and swipe those apps away.
- Move the iPhone out of direct sunlight, away from a car dashboard, and off hot surfaces.
- Unplug it from the charger. Charging adds heat on top of whatever else is happening.
- Set it somewhere at room temperature and leave it alone for 10 to 15 minutes.
- If a temperature warning is visible, wait until the warning clears before using the phone again.
Do not put the iPhone in a freezer or refrigerator. Sudden temperature changes and condensation can create new damage. Let it cool gradually in normal room air.
Check for a Runaway App or Update
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install pending updates.
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Battery Usage by App. Look for an app using far more battery than your actual use explains.
- Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and install app updates.
- If one app repeatedly heats the iPhone, delete and reinstall it or check whether the developer has acknowledged a bug.
Heat and battery drain often travel together. An app that runs hard in the background can warm the phone even when you are not actively using it.
Change Charging Habits
- Avoid gaming, navigation, long video calls, and streaming while the iPhone is charging.
- Use a wired charger if overheating happens mostly on MagSafe or Qi wireless charging.
- Remove thick cases before wireless charging.
- Do not charge in direct sun, in a parked car, or near another heat source.
- Let the phone cool before charging again if it is already hot.
Wireless charging usually creates more heat than a cable. That does not mean it is unsafe by itself, but it can push an already-warm iPhone over the edge.
What Overheating Means
iOS Protects the Phone
When the iPhone gets too hot, iOS may dim the display, slow charging, reduce wireless performance, disable the camera flash, or show a cooldown message. Those limits are protective behavior.
Heat Affects Battery Health
Frequent heat exposure is bad for long-term battery health. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging if capacity seems to be dropping quickly.
Idle Heat Is Suspicious
If the iPhone gets hot while sitting unused with no clear app or charging cause, restart it. If idle overheating continues, have Apple Support or an authorized provider check the battery and hardware.
Know the Temperature Range
Apple designs iPhone to work best around 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 to 35 degrees Celsius. Hot cars, beach sun, and other high-heat places can trigger warnings even when the phone is otherwise healthy.
