Mapping robot vacuums build a floor plan with lidar, cameras, or both. If the map never finishes, resets, or looks distorted, the first run was usually interrupted or the sensors were confused by the environment.
This applies to mapping robot vacuums from iRobot Roomba, Roborock, Shark, Eufy, and similar brands that create maps inside an app.

Use this if your robot keeps starting a new map, gets stuck partway through mapping, cannot save rooms, or will not let you create room-by-room cleaning and no-go zones.
Let it complete one full, uninterrupted mapping run
- Start the dedicated mapping, explore, or first cleaning run from the app.
- Do not pick up the robot or move it by hand during the run.
- Turn on lights in every room, especially for camera-based robots.
- Open doors to rooms you want mapped and close rooms you do not want included.
- Let the robot finish and dock on its own if possible.
- Avoid pausing, ending, or carrying it back early.
A robot tracks its position while it moves. Picking it up or stopping the run early can corrupt that position history, leaving the map incomplete or unusable.
Clear obstacles and clean the sensors
- Pick up cables, socks, toys, and small floor clutter before the first map.
- Temporarily cover or move mirrors and glass doors if the map looks warped.
- Wipe the lidar turret, camera lens, front bumper, and visible sensors with a soft dry cloth.
- Avoid mapping across very dark rugs or black flooring when possible, since some sensors struggle with light-absorbing surfaces.
- Free the robot if it gets stuck, then resume from the app if that option is available.
Check the app, firmware, and map limits
- Install firmware updates before repeated mapping attempts.
- Keep the robot on strong Wi-Fi so the completed map can upload or save properly.
- Check whether your model has a limit on saved floor maps.
- Delete unused maps if you have reached the map limit.
- If one saved map is corrupted, delete it and start a fresh mapping run.
Do not draw no-go zones on a shaky map. Finish one clean map first, then add restricted areas after the room outlines are stable.
Big furniture changes can make an existing map unreliable. Many apps can re-map one room or update an area without deleting the whole home, so look for that before starting over.
If you carry the robot between floors, confirm the model supports multi-floor maps. Models without that support may overwrite the old map or treat the new floor as an unknown space.
