Zigbee is a low-power wireless standard used by many smart bulbs, sensors, plugs, switches, and locks. It is common in smart homes because small battery devices can run for months or years without needing Wi-Fi-level power.
This applies to Zigbee devices from Philips Hue, Aqara, IKEA, SmartThings-compatible brands, and other smart home products that require a Zigbee hub or bridge.

Use this if a product box says Zigbee or requires a hub and you are not sure what that means. A Zigbee device usually cannot connect directly to your phone or normal Wi-Fi router.
What Zigbee is and how it works
- Zigbee is a radio protocol, like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but optimized for small smart home devices.
- A Zigbee hub or bridge translates between Zigbee devices and your app or Wi-Fi network.
- Common examples include the Philips Hue Bridge, Aqara Hub, Samsung SmartThings Hub, and some Echo devices with built-in hub support.
- Zigbee can form a mesh network. Mains-powered Zigbee plugs, bulbs, and switches can relay signals for nearby devices.
- Battery sensors normally join the mesh but do not extend it, because relaying would drain their batteries.
Zigbee vs. Wi-Fi vs. Z-Wave
- Wi-Fi devices connect directly to your router and usually do not need a hub, but they use more power and add to the router’s device load.
- Zigbee devices need a hub but are excellent for battery-powered sensors and low-power accessories.
- Z-Wave is another low-power mesh standard used by some locks, security systems, and sensors. It is not the same as Zigbee.
- A hub must explicitly support the protocol you are buying. Zigbee hubs do not automatically control Z-Wave devices.
- No standard is best for everything. Cameras often use Wi-Fi, while sensors and bulbs often work well on Zigbee.
Not every Zigbee hub supports every Zigbee device perfectly. Some brands expose all features only through their own hub, even when the radio standard is shared. Check compatibility with your exact hub before buying.
Matter can reduce cross-brand friction when a hub supports Matter bridging, but Matter does not magically turn every Zigbee device into a Matter device. The bridge and firmware must support it.
If a far-away Zigbee sensor drops offline, add a powered Zigbee plug or bulb between the sensor and hub. That often extends the mesh better than moving the hub or replacing the sensor.
