Latency is the delay between sending something over the internet and getting a response. It is measured in milliseconds and is why a fast-looking connection can still feel delayed in games, calls, and remote desktop.
Does this affect you?
Use this if a speed test shows plenty of Mbps but online games lag, video calls feel awkward, or remote work sessions react late. Bandwidth controls how much data can move at once; latency controls how quickly each round trip happens.
What latency measures and why it feels different from slow internet
Bandwidth and latency are related to networking, but they describe different problems.
- Every click, game action, voice packet, or webpage request has to travel to a server and back. Latency is the time for that round trip.
- Low latency, often under 20 to 30 ms, feels nearly instant. Around 100 ms or higher, games and calls start feeling delayed.
- A large file download can be fast on high bandwidth even with mediocre latency because it does not require split-second reactions.
- Real-time apps do care. Gaming, video calls, remote desktop, and voice chat all feel worse when latency climbs.
Common causes of high latency
The delay may come from the local network, provider, or server location.
- Distance to the server. A nearby game or call server usually responds faster than one across the country or overseas.
- Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, and crowded channels between your device and router.
- Network congestion in the home, especially when uploads or downloads saturate the connection.
- Connection type. Fiber generally has low latency, cable is usually good, and traditional geostationary satellite is much higher because the signal travels to space and back.
- A VPN server far from you can add latency because traffic takes an extra route.
More control
Use Ethernet for latency-sensitive devices
A wired Ethernet connection to a PC, console, or streaming box removes Wi-Fi interference and often cuts latency by 10 to 20 ms or more. It also reduces random spikes.
Choose closer server regions
Many games and apps let you choose a region. Pick the closest reliable region because physical distance directly affects ping. A local server usually feels better than one overseas even if your download speed is excellent.
Watch jitter, not only average ping
Jitter is latency variation from moment to moment. A connection jumping between 20 ms and 150 ms can feel worse than a steady 80 ms connection because calls and games need consistency.
