Fiber internet sends data as light through strands of glass or plastic fiber. That is different from cable and DSL, which use electrical signals over copper wiring, and it is the reason fiber can be faster and more consistent.

What actually makes fiber different
Fiber advantages come from the way the signal travels.
- Fiber uses pulses of light instead of electrical signals. Light can carry large amounts of data with less signal loss over distance.
- Upload speed is often the biggest day-to-day improvement. Cable and DSL commonly provide fast downloads but much slower uploads; fiber plans are often symmetrical, with similar upload and download speeds.
- An ONT replaces the cable modem role. The Optical Network Terminal converts the fiber light signal into Ethernet for your router.
- Fiber is less affected by electrical interference than copper wiring, so performance is often steadier during normal use.
What to expect when switching
Fiber service usually needs an installation appointment.
- A technician may run fiber to the home, install a fiber jack, and mount or place an ONT.
- Some providers combine ONT and router in one gateway, while others leave them as separate boxes.
- The ONT generally stays installed even if you later replace the router.
- Provider availability must be checked by exact address, not just city name. One side of a street may have fiber while the other does not.
More control
Fast fiber still needs good Wi-Fi
Fiber improves the connection entering the home. It does not automatically fix a weak router, poor router placement, old Wi-Fi hardware, or dead zones in far rooms.
Uploads are where fiber feels different
Video calls, cloud backups, large file uploads, livestreaming, and remote work are much smoother when upload speed is strong. This is where fiber often beats cable plans with similar download numbers.
Price is not always the barrier
In many markets, fiber costs about the same as cable at similar download speeds. The bigger limitation is whether a provider has physically built fiber to your address.
