An APK is the package file Android uses to install apps. Every Android app ultimately installs from an APK or related package, even when the Play Store hides that file from you.

What Is Inside an APK?

Play Store vs Sideloading
When you install from the Play Store, Google sends the needed package automatically and you never handle the APK file. When you install an APK from a website, email, or message, that is sideloading. It skips Play Store listing review, though Google Play Protect can still scan the app on your device.
Are APK Files Dangerous?
An APK sitting in Downloads does nothing until you install it. The risk depends on the source. An APK from a known developer website is very different from one from a random file-sharing page or unsolicited message.

- A developer shares a beta build for testing.
- A company distributes an internal work app.
- An app is not available in a country yet.
- Someone needs an older version after an update breaks an important feature.
App Bundles and Signatures
Developers often upload Android App Bundles to Google Play. Google then generates the right install package for your device. Digital signatures help Android verify updates come from the same developer, which is why modified APKs cannot normally replace installed apps cleanly.
