KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse. A KVM switch lets one monitor, keyboard, and mouse control two or more separate computers. Instead of unplugging cables, you press a button, use a hotkey, or trigger a small remote to switch the whole desk setup to another machine.

What a KVM switch actually does
The switch sits between your peripherals and computers and routes signals to the selected computer.
- Your keyboard, mouse, and monitor plug into the KVM, then separate cables run from the KVM to each computer.
- Switching may use a button on the box, a keyboard shortcut, a wired remote, or software depending on model.
- Modern KVMs often combine HDMI or DisplayPort video with a USB hub for keyboard, mouse, webcam, headset, or other accessories.
- A monitor with two video inputs is not the same thing unless keyboard and mouse switching are also handled.
- Check supported resolution and refresh rate carefully. Budget switches can cap a monitor below its real capability.
Which type fits your setup
Choose by the number of computers, monitors, and shared USB devices.
- For one monitor and two computers, a basic 2-port HDMI or DisplayPort KVM is usually enough.
- For two monitors, buy a dual-monitor KVM so both displays switch together and your extended desktop stays intact.
- If you switch many times per day, prioritize a reliable hotkey or reachable button.
- If you share webcams, headsets, or external drives, check the number of USB ports and whether they are USB 2.0 or 3.x.
- If you only need occasional control, software sharing tools or a monitor with built-in KVM may be cheaper.
Setup tips and common issues
Match cable versions to your monitor
The KVM and every cable in the chain must support your monitor resolution and refresh rate. A 4K 30Hz switch will limit a 4K 60Hz display even if the monitor and computer can do more.
USB-C KVMs can simplify laptops
Some newer KVMs use one USB-C cable from a laptop for video, USB devices, and sometimes charging. That is especially convenient for a work laptop docking setup.
Audio may not follow automatically
Some switches do not route speakers or headset audio with the video and USB devices. Check the specs or be prepared to change the audio output on each computer.
