What Is a GPU, and Do You Actually Need One?

GPU means graphics processing unit. It draws the images you see on screen and is built to perform many similar calculations at once. That parallel design makes GPUs excellent for games, video effects, 3D rendering, and some AI workloads, while the CPU remains responsible for general-purpose tasks.

This matters if you are buying a computer, wondering whether integrated graphics are enough, comparing gaming laptops, or choosing a graphics card for creative or AI work.

What a GPU actually does

The simple version is that it creates pixels and updates them quickly.

  • It renders the visual output for webpages, videos, animations, games, and desktop effects.
  • Integrated graphics are built into the CPU and share regular RAM. Dedicated graphics use a separate chip or card with dedicated video memory called VRAM.
  • GPU speed depends on architecture, core count, memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and power limits, not just clock speed.
  • The same parallel design also helps with video exports, 3D rendering, scientific compute, and local AI models.

Do you need a dedicated GPU?

For many people, the answer is no. It depends entirely on workload.

  • Skip a dedicated GPU for browsing, email, streaming, office documents, and basic school or business work. Modern integrated graphics handle those well.
  • Consider one for modern games, especially above 1080p or when you want high frame rates and visual settings.
  • Consider one for video editing, photo workflows, and effects-heavy creative apps that can accelerate previews and exports.
  • A dedicated GPU can be important or required for 3D modeling, CAD, machine learning, and local AI tools.
  • Check what you have in Windows Task Manager under Performance > GPU. Systems with both integrated and dedicated graphics may show GPU 0 and GPU 1.

A few things worth knowing

VRAM matters

VRAM stores textures, frames, and working data close to the GPU. If an app or game runs out of VRAM, it can stutter, crash, or drop quality even when the chip is otherwise fast enough.

Laptop and desktop GPU names are not equal

A laptop RTX or Radeon chip may use the same family name as a desktop card but run at lower power because of heat and battery limits. Always compare laptop-specific performance.

Prices can move for reasons beyond gaming

AI, rendering, and compute demand can affect GPU supply and pricing. If a card looks unusually expensive, broader market demand may be part of the reason.
