Adaptive Brightness changes screen brightness automatically based on surrounding light and your past adjustments. Samsung often calls the same feature Auto brightness. If it feels jumpy or wrong, you can turn it off and control brightness yourself.
These steps apply to Android 12 through Android 15 on Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, and similar phones.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your screen gets brighter or dimmer on its own and you want the brightness slider to stay exactly where you place it.
Turn Off Adaptive Brightness in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Find Adaptive brightness or Samsung Auto brightness.
- Turn the toggle off.
- Move the brightness slider to the level you want.
With automatic brightness off, the screen stays at your chosen level until you change it manually.
Use Quick Settings
- Swipe down with two fingers to open the expanded Quick Settings panel.
- Find the brightness slider.
- Tap the sun, auto, or similar icon near the slider if your phone shows one.
- Toggle automatic brightness off or on from there.
Things to Know Before Leaving It Off
It Learns Over Time
Adaptive Brightness does not only read the sensor once. Android learns when you manually correct brightness in different lighting, so it may improve after several days of use.
Battery Life Can Change
Automatic brightness often saves battery by keeping the display lower than a fixed high setting. If you turn it off, remember to lower brightness indoors.
Brand Names Differ
Pixel and Motorola usually say Adaptive brightness. Samsung usually says Auto brightness. The setting is still under Display.
If the Slider Does Nothing
If brightness does not change even with automatic brightness off, restart the phone. If it still fails, the light sensor or display hardware may need repair.
