When an Android phone is plugged into a Windows PC, it often starts in charging mode. To browse files, you must allow USB file transfer on the phone and use a cable that supports data, not only charging.
These steps apply to Android phones connected to Windows 10 or Windows 11 with USB-C.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the phone charges from the PC but does not show in File Explorer, no file transfer window appears, or you can only see photos instead of all folders.
Switch the Phone to File Transfer Mode
- Connect the phone to the PC with a USB cable known to support data transfer.
- Unlock the phone.
- Swipe down from the top to open notifications.
- Tap the USB notification, such as Charging this device via USB.
- Choose File Transfer, Transfer files, or File Transfer / Android Auto.
- On the PC, open File Explorer and look under This PC.
- Open the phone and browse folders such as DCIM, Download, Pictures, and Documents.
If the Phone Does Not Appear
- Try a different USB cable. Many cheap or charger-bundled cables cannot carry data.
- Try another USB port, preferably one directly on the laptop or the back of a desktop.
- Avoid hubs or docks while testing.
- Restart both the phone and the PC.
- If Developer options are enabled, set Default USB configuration to File transfer instead of No data transfer.
- Open Device Manager in Windows and check for a warning under Portable Devices or Other devices. Reconnecting can reinstall the driver.
MTP vs PTP
File Transfer uses MTP and shows most phone folders. Photo Transfer uses PTP and is camera-style access for photos only. MTP is the better default, while PTP can help on old PCs that only need pictures.
Wireless and Mac Alternatives
If USB remains unreliable, use Google Photos for photos and videos, Google Drive or email for small files, or Quick Share/Samsung tools where available. Macs do not mount Android phones automatically because macOS lacks built-in MTP support, so use a current transfer app such as OpenMTP, Samsung Smart Switch, cloud storage, or wireless sharing.
