Field Scenario
A customer’s computer suddenly displays a message demanding payment to unlock encrypted files, consistent with a ransomware attack.
What You Actually Do
- Isolate the affected system from the network immediately to prevent further spread
- Avoid paying the ransom, which is genuinely discouraged and doesn’t guarantee recovery
- Assess whether proper backups exist that could restore the data without paying
- Follow appropriate incident response procedures rather than attempting an improvised fix under pressure
