Microsoft Teams can record a work or school meeting directly, saving audio, video, and often a transcript. You do not need separate screen-recording software, but recording permission depends on the meeting role and your organization settings.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Microsoft Teams with Microsoft 365 work or school accounts on Windows, Mac, or the web. Personal Teams accounts do not support meeting recording in the same way.
Start a recording during the meeting
Anyone with the right meeting role and policy permission can start recording.
- Join the meeting.
- Click More actions, shown as the three-dot menu in the meeting controls.
- Choose Record and transcribe.
- Click Start recording.
- Teams displays a recording notice to everyone in the meeting.
- To stop, open More actions > Record and transcribe again and choose Stop recording.
The recording continues until someone stops it or the meeting ends. You can keep working in the meeting, but you should remain joined while recording is active.
Find the recording after the meeting
Recordings usually need processing time before they appear.
- Open Teams Calendar and select the meeting.
- Look in the Recap tab for the recording, transcript, and any generated notes your organization supports.
- Also check the meeting chat, where Teams often posts the recording link.
- If it is not visible yet, wait and check again. Long meetings can take longer to process.
Teams stores recordings in OneDrive for many normal meetings and in SharePoint for channel meetings. If the Teams link is missing, check the organizer OneDrive Recordings folder or the related team SharePoint site.
Fix a missing Record option
If recording is not shown, check the common permission issues first.
- Confirm you are using a work or school Microsoft 365 account.
- Check whether you are the organizer, co-organizer, or presenter. Attendees may not be allowed to record.
- Ask the organizer to start the recording or change your role.
- If the option is still missing, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator whether meeting recording is disabled by policy.
More control
Consent and notice
Teams notifies participants when recording begins. Some organizations or local rules may require additional consent, so follow your workplace policy before recording sensitive meetings.
Use transcript only
If you only need searchable notes, start a live transcript from More actions > Record and transcribe without recording video. Recording and transcription can also run together.
Sharing follows storage permissions
A recording link uses OneDrive or SharePoint permissions. Before forwarding it outside the meeting, check who can view the file and adjust sharing if needed.
Save important recordings
Many organizations automatically expire meeting recordings after a set period, often around 120 days unless admins changed the policy. Move or download important recordings for long-term storage.
